I will say I stumbled on this when I'm about to begin preparation for my first product on the internet. This is highly informative. Bookmarked with Google Bookmarks for reference. I like the MailChimp part for emailing. It's very effective and never get spammed! :)

I got some very useful ideas here with ur list. And I will use them on my product(s)

99designs
ZenDesk. I use zoho helpdesk and WHMCS but I will try ZenDesk

Suggestions

1. You never mentioned marketing using the social networks like Facebook, Twitter & others
2. Why not let media agencies handle the media copies. You just guide them
3. For the email hosting stuff, why not try Google Apps. Postini is great for spam filtering. Or am I missing something?

You said "and I’m still probably a few weeks away from being able to find out if anyone wants to use it". I think it would have been possible for you to be SURE that people want it and understand it.

When developing new products, it greatly helps to preform "validation" during the development process; ask customers what they need, what problems they have... That way, you are talking to your customers before the product exists and they can give you a lot of input which helps a lot. Also, towards the end, you can do usability testing which allows you to tweak the product before the launch. Coming time to launch, these customers are expecting your product and have been speaking about it - Work of mouth...

Besides that, great process!

Hello Dan,
Thanks for documenting the detailed procedure. This will be useful to many poeple doing product launch. I would like to ask you few questions with respect to this specific product launch.

>>Sign up with an e-mail marketing company to manage mailing lists, autoresponders, track e-mail opens and bounces, etc. Set up the lists, confirmation and reply mail text.

what were the considerations that made you select mailchimp over the aweber ?
did you perform any comparision between the two services ?

>>>Set up e-mail hosting with Rackspace Email (formerly MailTrust)
Since you have chosen mailchip for email marketing what is the email hosting on Rackspace Email for ?

>>>Contact affiliate networks about support for recurring commissions. Figure out what’s reasonable to pay to affiliates without destroying any profit margin.

Would you like to share your research findings ?

Thanks in advance.
