I bought a multitouch laptop

Tax time’s finally come and gone, and I had a really good year in 2008. Awio’s profit was more than 150% of the year before. To my accountant’s surprise, unlike most of the people in his office that month, my business grew the last two quarters of the year instead of sliding with the economy.

I took that as the cue to replace my half-dead “Averatec” laptop with something nicer. I went with an HP tx2z, with a 12.1″ multitouch touchscreen, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD and Vista Ultimate. I spent the last two days setting it up (downloading updates, installing software, replicating my development environment) and exploring the various operation modes: Normal laptop, using my fingers, tablet mode with the stylus, media center with the mini remote tucked into the ExpressCard slot, etc. I like it.

  1. Congratulations on the rising profit, and your new laptop, Dan. I hope both work out well for you in the coming year. ;)

  2. Doesn’t the screen look grainy to you? That’s the laptop I bought last year and although mine is an older model I still think they have grainy screens. Agree?

  5. Yeah all the touchscreen laptops have some graininess. It’s the digitizer sitting between the glass and the LCD. I checked it out at Best Buy before buying it to make sure I’d be OK with it, and I don’t mind.

I dig the little remote hidden in the side. The first time I pressed it, not only did the laptop turn on, but my desktop turned off, and my Xbox 360 turned on. Apparently they all pick up media center remotes…
