My Spontaneously Exploding Dishes

I really can’t explain this. I was quietly working on my computer, hunting down integration information to build an ecommerce site, when I heard a loud sound from the kitchen. I couldn’t figure out what the sound could be, but imagined something might’ve fallen off a counter onto the floor. I go in, look around, can’t find anything out of place, then look in the sink.

Broken Bowl

Apparently this bowl just spontaneously exploded in my sink. Split all the way across into two pieces. It had been in the sink for hours, the water in it room temperature. The spoon was in it when I put it there. What the heck?

It looks like milk leftover in the bowl so I would guess it was just cold cereal and milk. Quite a mystery. Got Ghosts?

haha, just messing with you, thats one scary movie though, probably something to do with the meterial used and ambient temperature and heat from rotting dishwater?

All products that go through some form of heat cycling during the manufacturing process, such as molding or oven curing, will have a certain amount of process-induced thermal stress. The thermomechanical reliability of a product is reduced if the product wasn’t properly stress relieved or cooled unevenly. In some cases the stress after manufacturing can be quite high. Like a mouse trap with a hair trigger, just the slightest change in temperature or an uneven change in temperature will exceed the structural integrity of the material. ;)
