Where’s My FiOS?

March 22, 2007

My cable internet has been up and down (99% down) for more than a day now. I’ve been using my email client refreshing every minute to tell when the connection is up for the few minutes each hour to submit assignments and download final exam study guides. Comcast has nothing to say about the service being virtually out except “we’re aware of an outage and will fix it as soon as possible”, which is better than the two times I had no internet for an entire week when they put filters on lines leading to my building that cut off all internet access.

Time Warner was no better before Comcast acquired the area. I’ve never had On Demand working correctly — on occasion if I try to watch something on it, I’ll suddenly see menus come up and selections being made as if someone else is controlling my box.

It’d be nice if there was an alternative with as good or better speeds… like FiOS. I hope service in Washington will be better with the absurdly high geek population ratio. I’m flying out on the 30th.

  1. My FiOS is getting installed at 8am tomorrow (T-minus 10 hours). Everyone be jealous of me. ;)

  2. Dan, all of the cable boxes that Time Warner uses can in fact be controlled by the same remote control, and since Time Warner only uses around 3-4 different models, chances that a neighbor has the same box and their remote is programmed to work with his own (and unfortunately yours as well), it very well may have been someone else controlling your box.

A lot of the boxes they get are defective…not only is my family proof of that, but my boss, our highschool intern and his family, and one other friend (most friends won’t start saying, “OMG, I hate this stupid cable box!” while having coffee one day, so there may be more friends of mine with similar problems).

Either way, I still prefer Time Warner over Comcast in this area. Good luck on the move!

  3. I have FIOS. It’s awesome. I feel for you ;).
