The Google Rejection

Looks like I won’t be packing up and moving out to California in April; Google turned me down for the job I applied to. Maybe that second interviewer’s questioning really did mean they wanted a C coder despite the job description listing C++.

Hi Daniel,

We would like to thank you for taking the time to interview with us for an Engineering Internship position. After carefully reviewing your experience and qualifications, we have determined that we do not have a position available which is a strong match at this time.

Thanks again for considering Google. We wish you well in your endeavors and hope you might consider us again in the future.

Sincerely,

How do I feel about that? No big deal; I sent my resume to Yahoo! a couple minutes after getting that mail. I still have an interview with Microsoft in a week and a half, and will talk to DuPont again around then as well. Worst case, I finish off the work experience requirement for my degree at DuPont, which was actually a pretty great job, and only a 10 minute drive from where I live. I’m pretty sure they’d hire me back considering I was offered a management position before my last coop there ended.

The only thing I can think of as far as the C versus C++ would be that if they’re doing a lot of fine-grained optimization at Google, sometimes the only way to solve a problem like that is to break in to C code within the C++ compiler…or even into Assembly. I’ve heard that Yahoo’s also a great place to work for, and has a similar environment to Google, though probably not as many perks.

Goodluck on the rest of the interviews and placement opportunities.

It’s never fun to be rejected… makes you wonder why at first. That’s great that you have options though and I’m sure it will all work out.

Bummer. Good luck at Microsoft and Yahoo (and Dupont!), though. Or, maybe a job at whatever Google division handles Analytics will open up. ;)

Good luck next time. Just getting to round two is a big accomplishment!
